Your creativity toolkit
Explore a technique, practise on a spare page, and combine ideas to find your own style.
Use the pen tip for outlines, tiny details, patterns and precision.
Turn the pen to its side for smooth strokes and larger areas.
Build colour gradually with additional strokes to add depth.
Bring two or more colours together for soft transitions and new shades.
Add darker areas where light does not reach to give objects shape.
Leave or add lighter areas where the light hits to make objects shine.
Move from dark to light for a gentle transition.
Try dots, dashes, scribbles or cross-hatching to suggest different surfaces.
Build tone with dots: more dots create darker areas, fewer create light.
Use parallel or crossing lines to create shadows and texture.
Choose where the light comes from, then place shadows opposite it.
Combine perspective with highlights and shadows to lift a drawing off the page.
Add a consistent shadow beside letters or objects to help them stand out.
Place light against dark or complementary colours together for impact.
Leave areas uncoloured for clean shapes, highlights and reflections.
Repeat shapes, lines or colours to create a rhythm in your artwork.
Use the colour-changing pen to transform an area into another colour.
Colour first, then use the eraser pen to make highlights, stripes or patterns.
Write or draw with the special effect pen to reveal a hidden surprise.
Combine outlines, colour changes, highlights and shadows for dimension.
